COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — It is known to be the busiest weekend for planting, as we are past the average last spring frost in Columbus.
Oakland Nurseries is anticipating large crowds for Mother’s Day weekend. It is something that the general manager, Shawn Schilling, is ready for at the Columbus location.
“When it comes to planting the annuals, this is really perfect,” he said. “This is the weather that the annuals are really looking for.”
For 85 years, Oakland Nurseries has been providing plants and guidance to Central Ohio gardeners.
If you’re excited to get your hands dirty, Schilling recommends checking your soil before planting.
“One of the first things you’re going to be looking at is amending the soil, checking the soil that you already have, and seeing kind of what you’re starting with — topsoil, peat, moss, or compost to making sure you have a good soil mix is perfect,” he said.
Once the plants are in the ground, Schilling said he recommends routine watering.
“Just watering,” he said. “If you’re doing things such as annuals, you can add some … fertilizer. When we’re talking deciduous plant material, trees and shrubs, whether you do a starter fertilizer or like a root stimulator, those sorts of things would be OK, but we normally don’t recommend fertilization.”
