The Sullenberger Aviation Museum previews its exhibit, “Aviation City,” showcasing Charlotte’s aviation history and impact.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Sullenberger Aviation Museum in Charlotte is preparing to open a new exhibit, “Aviation City,” on Saturday.
Set within a restored aircraft hangar—originally constructed in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration—“Aviation City” explores the economic and cultural evolution of Charlotte and the Carolinas through the lens of aviation. The exhibit traces the region’s journey from the early days of Morris Field to the modern era of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), offering a compelling narrative of growth, innovation, and community impact.
The exhibit features a striking collection of aircraft that played pivotal roles in aviation history, including a Piedmont Airlines DC-3, a Stearman biplane, an F-84 Thunderjet, a Bellanca 14-9 Crusair, and a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star. These aircraft serve as tangible links to the past, illustrating the technological and societal transformations that have shaped the region.
In keeping with SAM’s mission to provide inclusive, hands-on educational experiences, “Aviation City” also introduces two immersive flight simulators. One of these simulators is fully wheelchair-accessible, equipped with a platform and lift to ensure all visitors can engage with the exhibit’s interactive elements.
“Aviation City” marks the culmination of the museum’s multi-phase expansion and reimagining, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of cultural and educational enrichment in the Southeast.
The Sullenberger Aviation Museum—formerly known as the Carolinas Aviation Museum—reopened on June 1, 2024, with a new name and a reimagined facility located on the campus of Charlotte Douglas International Airport
The museum, located on the airport’s east side, includes a new 35,000-square-foot main gallery and immersive exhibits that highlight aviation history, innovation, and regional impact. The museum is also home to the Airbus A320 from US Airways Flight 1549, famously known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”
