COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Crime scene tape surrounds a Linden apartment on Cleveland Avenue after a shooting incident Thursday night left an elderly woman wounded inside her home.
The chaos unfolded when gunfire erupted in a breezeway of the apartment complex, with bullets penetrating the walls and striking the woman in the left arm.
James Washington, a resident who lives two floors above the shot-up apartment, expressed his concern for the victim. “She’s a good friend,” said Washington. “Me and my wife try to look out for her because she is elderly.” Washington added, “It’s right underneath of us, I didn’t expect none of that. I am just sorry Miss Annie got hurt.”
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Timothy Brown, was apprehended after a dramatic police pursuit and is now locked up in the Franklin County Jail.
Cell phone footage obtained by ABC 6 shows multiple police agencies boxing in Brown’s vehicle in a plaza parking lot on Huy Road. The chase concluded when Brown’s attempt to flee resulted in his Chevy Tahoe SUV colliding with a police cruiser and flipping upside down.
Brown now faces five charges related to the shooting, including felonious assault and having weapons under disability.
Police allege that Brown fired a 9mm handgun multiple times, hitting the woman in her apartment while exchanging gunfire with another man in the apartment stairwell breezeway. Charging documents reveal that the man had just exited the shooting victim’s apartment and engaged in an argument with Brown before shots were fired.
Brown is no stranger to the law; he has a criminal history that goes back more than 20 years and has served time for domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and aggravated robbery.
Washington expressed relief that his wounded neighbor is expected to recover, but urged city officials to take action to prevent further violence.
“They need to do something, for real, they need to do something,” said Washington. “‘Cause innocent people are getting hurt, and that ain’t cool.”
