JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida’s newest U.S. Senator, Ashley Moody, spoke on This Week in Jacksonville about her transition to Capitol Hill and her legislative priorities.
“I just surpassed my 100 days here in the United States Senate,” Moody said. Describing her early days as “certainly… a whirlwind,” she noted the fast pace of work under a new administration.
“It’s not just passing legislation or resolutions… we’re confirming a lot of the nominations coming from President Trump.”
Moody, appointed to replace Sen. Marco Rubio after he vacated the seat to join the Trump administration, was sworn in alongside a senator from Ohio.
“We walked from taking the oath back into the chambers and took a vote. And so that’s how quickly it happened,” she said, calling the experience a “culmination” of her personal and professional life—from her time as a judge and business lawyer to being a mother.
She marked her 100th day in office by passing her first piece of legislation. “It was signed going into Mother’s Day by President Trump. I was able to bring one of my sons up to watch that happen,” she said.
Moody’s first bill, the HELPER Act, supports first responders by allowing them to purchase homes in the communities they serve.
“That was a priority of mine as the attorney general, as the wife of a law enforcement officer,” she said.
Moody defended the speed of actions taken by the new Trump administration. “There was a lot of damage done by the last administration… and some of the agency heads that were in place,” she said. “Americans gave Donald Trump a mandate when he became the president.”
While acknowledging legal challenges to the administration’s policies, Moody expressed concern over perceived partisanship in the judiciary.
“There’s no doubt that certain cases have been used to slow down and stymie policies of this administration,” she said.
As a former judge and daughter and granddaughter of judges, she added, “Making sure that our public can trust in these institutions… that’s so important for a free nation under a rule of law.”
