Officials said the man had multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Joss voiced John Redcorn, a character in the animated series.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police said a man who was shot dead at a home on the city’s south side Sunday night was a former “King of the Hill” voice actor.

59-year-old Jonathan Joss – legally known as Jonathan Joss Gonzales, was killed in the shooting, police and neighbors said. Joss appeared as John Redcorn in the animated series.

SAPD said at around 7:02 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Dorsey Street for a shooting in progress.

Upon arrival, police said they found a man who had been shot multiple times. Emergency crews performed life-saving measures, but officials said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said investigators received reports of a suspect’s vehicle and the direction in which they fled.

Officers apprehended a suspect about a block away, according to officials. The suspect has been identified as Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 59.

Alvarez was taken to Bexar County jail with a $200,000 bond.

SAPD said they are speaking with witnesses to find out exactly what happened.

Neighbors told KENS 5 that Joss had lived on Dorsey Street for a long period of time, but his house burned down several months ago.

Since then, he had come back regularly to pick up his mail from the still-standing mailbox. Pieces of mail could be seen littering the ground Monday after the Sunday shooting incident.

They said he had a longstanding neighborhood feud with Alvarez. The two often argued and faced off with weapons, they said, and Joss frequently was armed with a crossbow.

Neighbors said they sometimes could hear gunshots coming from both men’s houses in the evenings. Nonetheless, they were surprised by the turn of events Sunday night. The men’s confrontations had never turned into actual violence until Sunday.

SAPD released a statement Monday afternoon as the investigation continued to progress.

“Our investigation has found no evidence whatsoever to indicate that the Mr. Joss’s murder was related to his sexual orientation. We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly.”

The original “King of the Hill” series appeared from 1997 to 2010. A revival of the show has been in the works for the past two years, with a premiere date for new episodes scheduled for August 2025.
