Ernest Davis, 49, now faces two charges.
INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A referee inside an Indian Trail sports complex is facing charges after his gun fired inside the building Saturday afternoon.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office said 49-year-old Ernest Davis, who was working at the complex during youth sporting events, was searching for items inside his gym bag at the time. The gun, which was concealed in the bag, went off.
While the facility was crowded with families inside, deputies said nobody was hurt after the round went off.
Deputies took Davies into custody. He has since been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm into occupied property. As of publication, he was still being booked into jail and a bond wasn’t set for him.
The sheriff’s office reminds gun owners to practice responsible firearms ownership and handling at all times, especially in public.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
