Huntersville leaders approved a major development project adding 260 apartments and six commercial buildings along Statesville Road.
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Huntersville’s growth boom is showing no signs of slowing down, with a newly approved project set to transform one of the last undeveloped stretches of land along Statesville Road near Exit 23 off Interstate 77.
The Mission Stumptown development — approved by the Huntersville Town Board — will bring around 260 apartment units and six commercial buildings to a 19-acre parcel that has long been forested. The project will also feature designated open space and 16 attainable housing units, a component town leaders called “one of the highest numbers ever presented by a developer” in the area.

Currently, the site is the final untouched plot along this corridor of Statesville Road. For some residents, the news brings frustration rather than excitement.
“It’s just too much traffic. You can’t travel,” Huntersville resident Clemmie McClain, who lives near the proposed site, said. “I’m glad they are trying to build Huntersville and make it a city, but there’s too much going on on Statesville Road.”
Concerns about traffic were a recurring theme during the town’s review process. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has plans to widen this stretch of Statesville Road from two to four lanes, with construction expected to begin in 2026.
Despite the pushback, officials praised the developer for including attainable housing units priced to be accessible to essential workers.
A representative for the developer told WCNC Charlotte the permitting process will take at least a year. No specific timeline was given for when construction might begin or be completed.
A spokesperson for the town of Huntersville said now that it was approved for rezoning, the next step is a construction plan review.
