A statement from the Charlotte East Language Academy PTA on Instagram claimed the CMS board took “too long to address the issue” with families and demanded a response via the ParentSquare communication platform. The PTA statement called on the board “to take a clear, public stance regarding ICE enforcement” and that the board had the ability “to create and uphold policies that protect our children and ensure schools remains safe, supportive spaces for every student.”
“No child should fear coming to school. No family should feel invisible. Now is the time for leadership that reflects the values of our community,” the statement concluded.
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the district for comment. The district said it could not confirm any details about possible arrests. A statement that was shared with parents was provided in response in both English and Spanish:
Good evening, Charlotte East Language Academy families. This is Principal Lang with an important message. We want to inform you that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity occurred near our school’s drop off line earlier today.
We understand that this may cause concern within our community. Please know that the safety, well-being, and dignity of our students and families are our top priority. Our school remains committed to being a safe, supportive, and welcoming space for every child.
Thank you for your continued support of CELA.

Charlotte East Language Academy is a full Spanish immersion magnet school with students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. It opened in the 2018-2019 school year and is located along Wilora Lake Road.
