GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – Children wheeled through obstacle courses and received free safety helmets during Clay County’s Kids Bike Rodeo Friday at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

The three-hour event focused on teaching essential bicycle safety skills to young riders through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

“This event is to educate our little friends on bike safety and make sure that they know how to ride the roads and to make sure we are doing everything to educate them before they hit the roads,” Connor Loiseelle said.

Children navigated specially designed obstacle courses while learning proper riding techniques. The event also featured a bike hospital checkup station where experts examined bicycles for safety issues and a bike wash station where young riders learned proper maintenance.

Joshua Wyrick, an event participant, said he had fun at the event and learned how to be safe while riding his bike.

A highlight of the evening was the free helmet giveaway program, which provided properly fitted safety gear to participants while supplies lasted. Certified helmet fitters conducted individual appointments to ensure proper fit and maximum protection.

“[Helmets are] the single most safest device that’s going to protect us from brain injuries,” said Jacaie Morrison, prevention educator for Wolfson’s Children Hospital.

Both bicycles and scooters were welcome at the event, though motorized vehicles were not permitted. Participants had pre-registered through the county’s LetsPlayClay.com website to secure their spots and schedule helmet fittings.

The community initiative brought together multiple organizations, including Clay County Parks and Recreation, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Wolfson Children’s Hospital, The Players Center for Child Health, and Gordon Chevrolet.
