JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – News4JAX show director Matt Harms got knocked down — twice.

First, by a surprise amputation. Then the recent loss of a toe.

Last year, Matt opened up about his journey with Type 2 diabetes, which began when a cut on his foot became infected.

When the infection quickly spread, his trip to the emergency room in October 2023 ended with him having his leg amputated.

That’s when Matt was diagnosed with the disease.

He said he had no symptoms and rarely visited a doctor for regular checkups.

Since his surprise amputation, Matt has battled depression and has been forced to embrace a whole new life with an artificial limb.

He’s also overcome more setbacks — the amputation of a toe and a diabetic ulcer, both on his remaining foot.

Through it all, Matt shared his story, hoping others would be inspired to stay in the fight, even when times are tough.

You can watch Joy’s original interview with Matt below:

Matt joined the “Discover the Joy: The Purdy Podcast” podcast one year after his episode.
