AUSTIN, Texas — Each month, CBS Austin and Telemundo Austin spotlight a local organization through the Community Partner Program. This month, we’re highlighting the Moving Beyond Cancer Collaborative (MBCC), which provides free exercise and meditation classes for cancer patients and their loved ones.
Mari Galle, the executive director of MBCC visited We Are Austin to share more into the inspiration behind the organization and the services they offer. Galle is an oncology acupuncturist who’s been working with cancer patients for about ten years.
“I saw a lot of gaps in comprehensive cancer care including integrative oncology services,” Galle explained. “We started the non-profit with the idea that we don’t want any type of feasibility issues to be the cause of someone not reaching out to get care with acupuncture, massage or exercise services,” she added.
Amanda Pincock, a client of MBCC, spoke about her personal experience with the organization. She emphasized the positive impact their resources have had on her well-being during her own cancer journey.
“I was having a lot of side effects…a lot of pain in different ways,” Pincock explained, adding MBCC appointments with an esthetician helped her navigate skin issues she was experiencing.
“The environment was just always super welcoming. I went back weekly for treatment and it helped me so much as I was going through the rest of the treatment for cancer,” Pincock said. “It makes you feel validated that you’re going through these difficult things.” she added.
Galle explained that MBCC offers a variety of classes and services tailored to the needs of cancer patients and their families. Services also include acupressure and access to ten different exercise and meditation classes weekly– available in person and online. These include yoga, Pilates, guided meditation and cardio workouts. The resources are also available to caregivers.
