Morehead City Police name new K9 after fallen Greensboro officer Michael Horan.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A police officer within the Morehead City Police Department named his K9 after a fallen Greensboro Police Officer.

The department released a video on Facebook introducing the K9 as K9 Horan named after Officer Michael Horan.

Officer Horan died while trying to stop a man with a gun inside a Food Lion on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro. The incident happened in December of 2024.

In a Facebook post, the department states K9 Horan will work with Officer Tim Estep.

Officer Estep requested the K9 be named after Horan. A statement from the Chief was released in the post:

“We are excited to have the K9 Team of Tim Estep and Horan in service to our community and its citizens,” said Morehead City Police Chief Bryan Dixon. “Tim’s request to honor the memory of his friend and partner, Officer Michael Horan, with the naming of his new K9 partner, Horan, signifies just how dedicated Tim takes this new role. Together, this K9 Team has already proven effective, and I am proud to recognize them as part of our bigger team here at the Morehead City Police Department.”

The post also states K9 Horan is trained in article searching, narcotics, tracking and apprehension.
