FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – National Hospital Week is a time to recognize the vital role hospitals and healthcare workers play in our communities.

News4JAX anchor Joy Purdy toured one of the newest hospital sites in Clay County, Baptist Medical Center Clay in Fleming Island.

Hospital President Ed Hubel was the tour guide and introduced Purdy to all the department heads.

During our tour, he showed her the regular TVs that patients can watch in their rooms, but in the waiting rooms and other shared spaces, the TVs can’t be changed. They stay on calm, nature settings because everyone is at the hospital for different reasons.

There’s a restaurant in the main building that’s open to the public — you don’t have to be a patient to eat there. They say they have the best burgers in Clay County.

The Chapel is a small room with a Bible verse on the wall, and a pulpit, but it also has a soft mat and a window facing “East,” and it’s marked that way, for those who are of Muslim faith; East is the direction faced during prayer.

In the Maternity and Neonatal Care Unit — the hospital partners with the Clay public library system to present babies and their families with their first reading books.

Joy’s favorite hospital feature was for the new moms and their families, where they get to push a button that sends what the hospital called a “joy in the air” — a short, soft lullaby goes over the intercom, throughout the entire hospital, and everyone stops and smiles, knowing a baby was just born!
