The former college basketball player’s NFL career appears to be over before it started.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have cut tight end Colin Granger, the former college basketball player who hadn’t played football since middle school, a league source confirmed with WCNC Charlotte’s Nick Carboni.

Granger, who last played college hoops at Coastal Carolina following stints at Ohio University and Western Kentucky, signed with the Panthers in April. It was the first time he had planned to play football since the eighth grade.

His NFL career is seemingly on hold, if not over, as he was cut by the team on Thursday. Granger is dealing with a hamstring injury according to The Athletic, which first reported that Granger was let go.

Granger told WCNC Charlotte that he was inspired by NFL veteran George Fant, a former college basketball player who made the transition to the NFL nearly a decade ago.

“He hit me up. He DM’d me early to midway through the season and basically just like kinda explained who he was in and and what he you know what he did how his situation worked out and that he really believed that I could do the same thing,” Granger said.

Three days after playing his last game at Coastal Carolina, Granger took the leap and moved in with Fant to begin chasing an NFL career. It’s now uncertain if he’ll get another opportunity to make an NFL roster.
