Both organizations used to be one and the same until a split in 1968 that mostly had to do with what it means to be a “golf pro.”
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — While thousands flock to Quail Hollow this week for the PGA Championship, many people will see the PGA logo on signs, banners, and flags.
The PGA of America is the one putting on this event. Many people assume it is the PGA Tour.
But for many golf fans, it’s easy to tell the difference between them. If you don’t know, let’s look at the difference.
You have the PGA Tour and the PGA of America, which are often both referred to as the PGA. However, they are not the same.
Let’s look at the differences.

Both organizations used to be one and the same until a split in 1968, which mostly has to do with what it means to be a “golf pro.”
The PGA Tour is an organization that runs golf tournaments for the best golfers in the world who make their living from competing.
Meanwhile, the PGA of America is made up of 30,000 members who all make a living off the game in different ways. For the most part, it’s professional golf teachers.
The organization sets standards for certified instructors who work at golf courses or pro shops, and so on.
The PGA of America is the group that runs the PGA Championship, which is taking place in Charlotte — not the PGA Tour.
While the PGA Tour organizes a series of tournaments, it does not run any of the four majors. That means the PGA Championship can have some different rules.
This is why golfers from the LIV golf league are allowed to compete as well as 20 PGA of America Pros — those instructors we mentioned earlier.
They can earn their spot at the PGA Professional Championship, which is normally held a few weeks before the PGA Championship.
