The Rock Hill Police Department warns residents about a scam involving fake DMV toll payment texts.
ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Rock Hill Police Department has issued an urgent warning to residents about a text message scam claiming to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles regarding unpaid tolls.
Numerous residents have reported receiving text messages stating they have unpaid toll charges that require immediate payment, according to police.
Officials say these messages are fraudulent attempts to steal banking information.
“We are aware that many people have received texts about an unpaid toll,” said the Rock Hill Police Department in a statement issued Thursday. “Remember these are scams and any attempt you make to pay will release your banking information to scammers. Do not use any of the links in these texts.”
Officials advise residents who receive these messages to delete them immediately and refrain from clicking any embedded links or providing personal information. Legitimate government agencies typically do not request payment or sensitive information through unsolicited text messages.
Residents who believe they may have fallen victim to this scam are encouraged to contact their financial institutions immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.
For questions about genuine toll payments or DMV matters, residents should only use official government websites or contact agencies through verified phone numbers.
