Across the Northeast, Santander Bank will close 18 branches, including six in Massachusetts, the Boston Business Journal reported.
Of the six banks, one in Worcester and one in Boston are expected to close, the Journal wrote, citing filings from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
One in Salem, New Hampshire; in Providence, Rhode Island; and 10 across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania will also close.
“Santander Bank continues to refine its branch footprint and retail presence, including introducing new formats and investing in digital capabilities to better accommodate our customers and meet their evolving needs,” a Santander Bank spokesperson told MassLive.
The closure of physical banks in favor of online banking grew following the COVID-19 pandemic, with Santander closing several dozen branches between 2020 and 2024. Eight branches in Massachusetts closed in 2021.
Headquartered in Boston, Santander operates 124 branches across the Bay State and is the third-largest bank in the state, the Journal reported.
