SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a man who reached for an officer’s weapon during a struggle was shot twice and critically injured Friday outside a North Side restaurant.

The shooting happened outside the Thai Hut restaurant in the 2600 block of North Loop 1604 West near Bitters Road.

SAPD Chief William McManus provided additional details on the shooting during a Friday afternoon news conference.

McManus said one of his officers was dispatched on a theft call to the restaurant. The suspect, 24, allegedly stole a pair of scissors.

According to SAPD, the suspect left the restaurant and returned, where he talked to an officer who arrived at the scene.

The officer ended the conversation and went inside the Thai Hut while the suspect left the area a second time, McManus said.

Police said the suspect returned to the scene another time when he attacked the officer.

Initially, McManus said the officer deployed pepper spray on the suspect, but the struggle between them continued.

During the struggle, the SAPD chief said the suspect reached for the officer’s weapon, which caused the officer to push the suspect away. McManus said the officer drew his weapon and shot the suspect twice outside the restaurant.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and the officer sustained minor injuries that were treated at the scene, SAPD said.

SAPD said it was unknown if the suspect was armed with the pair of scissors at the time of the struggle or at the time of the shooting.

The chief said the officer has 23 years of experience with the department.

McManus also said it is unknown if the suspect threatened anyone at the restaurant.

The SAPD Shooting Team and the department’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct separate investigations that will be reviewed by the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, according to SAPD.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
