HOUSTON – Kyla Jade can do it all like a pro; she sings, writes, produces and arranges her own music. She even creates music for major television networks, awards shows, and other recording artists.
A resident of Nashville, Kyla now finds herself on the road, having made her Broadway National Tour debut in ‘The Wiz’ at Hobby Center in downtown Houston just this week.
In 2018 she made a splash on NBC’s The Voice, winning third place on Team Blake.
Kyla’s varied experience on stage and behind the scenes is a testament to her talent and tenacity, and her approach of never hesitating to roll up her sleeves and learn a new skill.
“I have failed numerous times, I have been told ‘no’ a thousand times,” said Kyla about her life in the entertainment industry.
Reflecting on her time singing background vocals for stars like Jennifer Hudson, Earth Wind and Fire and Peter Frampton, Kyla explained that backing for another singer is often the most difficult gig.
“A background artist has to know everything; you have to know all the parts, you have to know the musical parts, you have to know the movements,” Kyla said.
Kyla has also toured with Wynonna Judd, Patti La Belle, and has sung background vocals for Jennifer Hudson, Earth Wind and Fire and Peter Frampton. She sat down with Houston Life co-hosts Derrick Shore and Tessa Barrera to share more about her latest gig, her philosophies about hard work and what it takes to become a great talent.
Catch Kyla in The Wiz on stage at the Hobby Center through Sunday, May 4th.
