A live sperm whale beached on Hilton Head Island is being kept comfortable as marine experts wait for euthanasia drugs and a vet from out of state.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Experts are working to comfort a beached sperm whale in South Carolina as they wait for the appropriate euthanasia medication.
The town of Hilton Head shared photos of the large whale on the beach on Sunday morning and explained what is now underway.
“When whales beach themselves, it’s often because they are already seriously ill or injured,” the town said in a social media statement.
The town said the whale is still alive, but experts at the scene have determined that euthanasia is the most humane option. However, the type and amount of medication required for this aren’t available nearby, so it’s being brought in from Florida. An experienced veterinarian is also on the way from the Georgia Aquarium to perform the necessary procedure.
In the meantime, the town said trained professionals, marine mammal experts, and members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are working to keep the creature comfortable.
“We understand how difficult this is to witness, and we appreciate the community’s compassion and patience,” the town said.
