WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Sunday announced he had directed the Department of Commerce to place a 100% tariff on all foreign movies imported into the U.S.
Other countries, Trump argued, are trying to entice filmmakers and studios based in the United States to relocate outside the country. This, he claimed, amounts to a national security threat.
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” Trump wrote. “Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated.”
“This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” Trump added. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”
Trump revisited the stance in remarks to reporters Monday morning and hinted California Gov. Gavin Newsom is to blame for Hollywood being “destroyed.”
“Hollywood is being destroyed,” Trump said. “You have a grossly incompetent governor that allowed that to happen, so I’m not just blaming other nations. But other nations, a lot of them, have stolen our movie industry.”
Gov. Newsom did not appear to acknowledge the remark, though he wrote on Saturday the Golden State is being disproportionately impacted by Trump’s tariffs.
“No state has more to lose from President Trump’s disastrous tariffs than California,” he wrote.
Reacting to Trump’s move was former Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.
“During my 4 yrs in Congress, my constituents were always begging me to ‘please save Hollywood!’” he wrote via X.
