Trump to host Musk in Oval Office as DOGE tenure ends

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump will host a news conference with Elon Musk in the Oval Office on Friday, following Musk’s announcement that he is leaving his government role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“I am having a Press Conference tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. EST, with Elon Musk, at the Oval Office,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific!”

Musk’s time as a special government employee comes to an end on May 30 after he was appointed in January to lead DOGE and cut wasteful spending.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” he wrote on X. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

Musk’s departure comes after he criticized the centerpiece of Trump’s legislative agenda, saying he was “disappointed” by what the president calls his “big beautiful bill.”

The bill includes many of the President’s domestic agenda priorities, including extending his 2017 tax cuts, adding money for defense spending, and extra money and resources for immigration and deportation.

“I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not decreases it, and undermines the work DOGE is doing,” Musk told CBS.

As of May 26, DOGE has saved $175 billion through asset sales, contract cancellations, fraud payment crackdowns and other spending cuts, according to its website. It averages out to about $1,087 in savings per taxpayer.

Musk reassured shareholders earlier this month that he was rededicating himself to electric automaker Tesla and rocket manufacturer SpaceX.
