CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people were arrested for kidnapping a toddler at an apartment complex in south Charlotte.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Monday on Shady Oak Trail near South Boulevard, according to an incident report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Records say Donnell Cochran, 36, and Tanika Barnes, 50, kidnapped the 2-year-old boy “for the purposes of holding [him] in involuntary solitude.” The CMPD report stated that Cochran and Barnes were unknown and unrelated to any of the victims involved.
Cochran pointed a gun at two people during the incident, according to records. It’s unclear if the two victims were related to the 2-year-old boy.
Cochran is charged with first-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy, possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of assault by pointing a gun, possession of cocaine, and carrying a concealed gun. He is being held in Mecklenburg County jail with a $250,000 bond.
Barnes is charged with first-degree kidnapping and felony conspiracy. She was released from jail after posting a $5,000 bond.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the severity of the crime.
