The district’s budget now awaits county commissioner approval.
UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The Union County Public Schools Board of Education approved a budget request Tuesday that includes a $2,000 salary supplement for teachers, reversing an earlier proposal to reduce the increase.
The board voted to maintain the full $2,000 supplement after initially considering scaling back to a $1,000 increase. If approved by county commissioners, the move would potentially raise the district’s teacher pay ranking from 17th to near the top 10 in the region.
Superintendent Andrew McLamb presented a $141.4 million operating budget with a $10.8 million increase from the current fiscal year. The proposal includes funding for additional nurses, extending elementary staff to 12-month positions, and organizational changes in the Exceptional Children’s department.
The board also removed a proposed $400 monthly stipend increase for board members.
County commissioners initially proposed an $8.6 million funding increase, leaving a potential $3 million funding gap that the district will need to negotiate.
The budget remains tentative, with final approval pending county review and potential adjustments based on state budget allocations.
