Wake Forest’s baseball coach apologized to the University of Tennessee for using what appeared to be a homophobic slur midway through Monday’s game.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Wake Forest’s baseball coach and athletics director both apologized on Tuesday after a moment caught on camera went viral on social media during the team’s regional elimination game against Tennessee.
People shared the moment on social media, which appears to show Coach Tom Walter mouthing a homophobic slur on national television right before Tennessee’s Andrew Fischer hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend Tennessee’s lead to 8-2.
The day after the clip went viral, Wake Forest Director of Athletics John Currie and Coach Walter issued apologies to the Vols, calling it an “outburst” but not explaining what the outburst was. Walter claimed he did not remember the moment. Currie said the moment was “out of character” for Walter.
“I am very sorry for my outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused. I have seen the videos and while I do not remember the specific moment clearly, the language doesn’t reflect my values or the standards of this program,” Walter said. “Regardless, I own the consequences and I apologize to the University of Tennessee, to Wake Forest University, and the SEC & ACC.”
People criticized Walter and Wake Forest leaders, saying Walter needs to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community. Some said he should also be fired after the comments.
Tennessee beat Wake Forest in the best-of-three regional series 11-5, advancing to face Arkansas in the Super Regionals.
