Walter Winn was killed during a robbery in 2015 near the McCormick County line. Edgefield deputies still hope someone will help solve the case.

EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Just months shy of 10 years after a murder that still haunts a South Carolina community, a sheriff’s office says it still holds out hope someone with information will come forward and help solve a community tragedy.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office retold the story of how Walter Winn of Winn’s Grocery lost his life on Aug. 21, 2015. The department said he and Linda Scott were working at the store on Highway 378 near the McCormick County line when two male suspects came in around noon with the intent to rob them.

The sheriff’s office said Winn was shot during the robbery and died. And while the sheriff’s office said investigators followed several leads at the time, they didn’t lead to the case being solved, and, to this day, little is known about who was responsible. With the 10th anniversary of the death now just months away, the sheriff’s office is urging the community to come forward with information, no matter how minor it may seem.

“We want to serve justice and help bring closure to the Winn family,” the sheriff’s office said. “If you were in the area during the time in question and saw anything, we are interested in talking to you.”

The sheriff’s office said new information could help them pull together “little pieces of evidence” in the case and solve what authorities still describe as a “heinous crime.”

Anyone with information can contact Captain Chase Harley at 803-336-0372.
