Wingate University locked down after two men with a gun confronted a student.
WINGATE, N.C. — A lockdown was in effect for hours overnight Monday into Tuesday on Wingate University’s campus. The university said it went on lockdown after two men came into Helms residence hall wanting to fight a student.
The incident was connected to an earlier incident, according to the university. The student confronted by the men noticed one had a gun, so the student called 911.
The two men left the scene, and university officials lifted the lockdown once police searched the area and found no remaining threat to campus. There was an increased police presence on campus the remainder of the night due to the investigation.
Wingate University said no shots were fired, and nobody was hurt.
The first alert about the lockdown was posted on X at 10:41 p.m. on Monday. The alert that the lockdown was lifted was posted at 12:46 a.m.
