WooSox end homestand on high note with 3-1 win vs. Durham

Roman Anthony went 2-for-4 with two RBI to help the Worcester Red Sox end their homestand with a 3-1 win over the Durham Bulls on Sunday afternoon.

Worcester scored all three of its runs in the third. A sacrifice fly from Seby Zavala made it 1-0 before Anthony gave the WooSox some breathing room with an RBI-single.

The Bulls, despite having eight hits on the afternoon, could not get anything going offensively. They got on the board in the seventh with an RBI-double from Bob Seymour to make it 3-1, but that’s as close as they’d come. Durham went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.

Cooper Criswell — who hadn’t pitched in 24 days — opened the game for Worcester and tossed two scoreless innings with a strikeout. Bryan Mata had a strong showing on the mound with four strikeouts in two innings of work. He allowed Durham’s lone run.

The win didn’t come without an injury concern, though. Jhostynxon Garcia — who’s been enjoying success at the plate since his promotion to Worcester — left in the sixth inning. MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day reported that it appeared he was grabbing at his side after running out a ground ball. It’s unclear if he felt discomfort due to his swing.

WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported Garcia was dealing with lower back soreness.

The WooSox enjoy an off day on Monday before beginning a six-game road trip against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Tuesday.
